About Village Africa
Visit the Village Africa website

Village Africa is committed to the alleviation of poverty, focussing on education and healthcare. In the local dialect its name is 'Vyaadahikana' which means 'it can be done'.

Village Africa works in the West Usambara Mountains, in the villages of Yamba and Milingano. It's main current initiatives are to provide volunteers to teach English, help progress local building projects and to establish a fully equipped and staffed health post.

Village Africa works in close partnership with the Catholic Church and the village committees as well as developing links in the wider community and in the UK. It has the official blessing of the Catholic Bishop of Tanga as well as the Milingano Ward Committee (government officers overseeing three villages including Yamba). Although volunteers do not need to be practising Catholics, they are expected to respect the values of the church.

Village Africa is run by Caroline Johnston and a strong Tanzanian team, with support from within Tanzania and from the UK.

Caroline (pictured right) is British and has lived and worked in India, Ghana and Tanzania for most of the last 8 years as a teacher and charity worker. Caroline directs all the volunteer projects with day to day support is provided by the Village Africa team. Caroline is very well respected and valued by the communities she works with and has been appointed a Village Elder by one community in the Usambaras.
